What is Male Pattern Baldness?
Male pattern baldness follows a pattern of a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples. This is because over time, the hair follicles shrink and are unable to grow new hair, a change which is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition. Male baldness is also called androgenic or androgenetic alopecia and it’s a condition that runs in families.
What Are Male Pattern Baldness Symptoms?
The symptoms of male pattern baldness are usually characterised by the thinning of hair at the hairline, which will recede and form an M shape. The Savin Scale, developed by Dr Ronald Savin in the mid 1990s is considered to be one of the best ways to assess the different stages of hair loss, as shown on the diagram below.
