Ditch Your Out Of Date Hair Products

Check the expiry dates on your shampoos and conditioners and recycle those that are out of date.

Simone says:  "Don't be tempted to use hair or beauty products that are out of date.  You may end up with skin irritation or even burning or itching.  Plus, the hair products will not perform as well as they should."

Hair sprays are less likely to deteriorate but do check all cream or liquid-based products in tubs and bottles.

Simone advises “The average life span of an unopened professional haircare is normally around three years. When opened, it’s about 12 to 18 months or sometimes 24 months, depending on the brand you’re using.”    So take a good look at your beauty cabinet and clear out all those expired products.   If you have anything unwanted that's unopened, a local charity may be glad to receive it.

Now you've got space, it's a great opportunity to restock with fresh supplies of your favourite products, or find something new.   Head over to our online shop for inspiration, or pop into our Westbourne salon and we'll be happy to advise you.

Deep clean your brushes

We all know that dirty make-up brushes can harbour germs, but we often forget that the same goes for our hair brushes.   Clumps of hair, dead skin cells, hair products and oil can all build up in the bristles of unwashed brushes, creating the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive.  No one wants to be blow drying grease and dirt back into freshly washed hair, so it's important to get into the habit of cleaning your brushes regularly (not just when you are spring cleaning your routine!)

We recommend removing built-up hair every week then using a deep-cleansing shampoo regularly to get your brushes properly clean.  If you use a wooden or paddle brush, you should check your manufacturers guidelines on washing, as water can get trapped inside and soaking may result in the wooden finish getting spoilt.   A quick swish should be OK though, to keep it clean.

Spruce up your hair tools

If you use your electrical tools on a regular basis, they can suffer from the same build up of dirt, products, grease and germs as your brushes.   Simone says  “Curlers, straighteners and wands should be cleaned regularly, as many get covered in serums, sprays and oils.”

To clean your stylers, first make sure they are unplugged and never submerge them in water. Use a damp soft cloth or baby wipe to clean the styling plates.   If this doesn't get them clean, you could try using some rubbing alcohol.   Never use a scourer on them as this can damage the plates and surfaces.  Be sure to dry the styling tool completely before using it.

Another often over-looked area of dust and dirt build up is your hairdryer filter, which is usually on the back.   This can affect how well your dryer operates in the long run, so it's well worth keeping it clean.   Check your manufacturer's instructions first and make sure your dryer is unplugged, but then you should be able to twist off the filter on the back, or on some models, unclip it.  Simply wipe with a warm, damp (not wet) hand towel to remove the dust, lint and other build up, then dry.

Invest in your pillowcase

No matter how soundly you sleep, the truth is you spend hours each night with your hair - and face - scrunched up against your pillow.  The friction against your cotton pillowcase can cause a tousled bed head the next morning that's not only difficult to style but leaves your hair frizzy and prone to breakage.     To prevent this, we'd recommend investing in a silk pillowcase if you can.  Dermatologists say that sleeping on a silky smooth surface will make your skin less prone to wrinkles too, so it's definitely worth a try!

We know that silk pillowcases can be pretty pricey, so you could look out for one with a cotton underside, which makes it more affordable.   Failing that, simply make sure you wash and change your pillowcase very regularly to avoid transferring grease and bacteria build up onto your hair and skin.

Spring Clean Your Hair Routine with Davines Vegan Products Bournemouth Salon

Change your hair care products with the season

We all know that we need to adapt our skin care routine as the seasons change, adding SPF or a heavier moisturiser, but the same goes for your hair.

As the weather brightens up during the spring and summer months, your hair colour may start to fade in the sun, so you'll need to protect it from the UV rays with an SPF spray.  It would also benefit from a deep conditioning treatment, such as one of the Davines Circles.     You may find your scalp and hair get greasier in hot, humid weather so you'll need to adjust your shampoo.   Conversely, in the winter months the cold wind outside coupled with central heated homes can leave your hair dry with split ends.

If you aren't sure which products are right for  you, speak to your Simone Thomas stylist and we'll be happy to recommend the right ones from our range of Davines vegan hair care products
