Imagine moving to another country to study and make a better life for yourself and your family – but instead you find yourself stuck inside, crippled by social anxiety? That’s what happened to Mehroz Ashraf. He moved to England from Pakistan via Dubai, but, rather than being able to enjoy student life at Lancaster University, he felt too anxious to venture out. He found out he was suffering from Male Pattern Baldness, a male hair loss condition that happens to a lot of men – but more usually at an advanced age.

“I found myself losing my hair at an early age,” he said. “I just didn’t feel confident enough to go out and approach other people – it seemed easier to stay in on my own.”
But studying a senior management university degree, it meant he had more than just the books to worry about. His image was part of the package. And when Mehroz, 23, started his placement year, he couldn’t hide away any more. He had to find a way to interact with others and put his years of study into practice.
“I was lucky enough to get a placement in Bournemouth and I just fell in love with the town,” he said. “I love walking on the beach, horse riding, anything outdoors. But I felt so anxious most of the time.”
Mehroz started losing his hair aged 17. It was pointed out by family members and people at college. By the time he moved to the UK, aged 20, he had spent a fortune on products but still not found a solution.
“I was losing more and more hair as time went on,” Mehroz said. “The hair regrowth treatments I tried were so expensive and didn’t seem to solve the problem. The thought of using them over a lifetime was not something I wanted to do. I even looked at a hair transplant – I was that desperate!”
