Chemotherapy & Hair Loss: Can hair loss be prevented?

Cancer Hair Loss - Advice From Simone Thomas Trichology Clinic in Dorset

Here at Simone Thomas hair loss clinic in Bournemouth we know that no treatment exists that can guarantee your hair won’t fall out during or after your chemotherapy treatment.  Therefore the best way for you to deal with impending hair loss is to plan ahead and focus on making yourself comfortable with your appearance before, during and after your cancer treatment.  We have a wide range of synthetic wigs and real human hair wigs and hair pieces for you to chose from in the comfort of a friendly and relaxed Hair Loss Salon.

There are several treatments you may have heard about that have been investigated as possible ways to prevent hair loss, but none has been absolutely effective, including:

Scalp hypothermia (cryotherapy). During your chemotherapy treatment, ice packs or similar devices are placed on your head to slow down the blood flow to your scalp. This way, chemotherapy drugs are less likely to have an effect on your scalp. Studies of scalp hypothermia have found it works somewhat in the majority of people who have tried it. However, the procedure also causes a small risk of cancer recurring in your scalp, as this area doesn’t receive the same dose of chemotherapy as the rest of your body. People undergoing scalp hypothermia report feeling uncomfortably cold and having headaches during treatment. Here at Simone Thomas hair loss clinic in Bournemouth, we advise that you speak with your doctors and nurses regarding this method and whether it is right for you.

Minoxidil (Rogaine). Applying minoxidil — a drug approved for both female and male pattern baldness — to your scalp before and during chemotherapy isn’t likely to prevent your hair loss, although some research shows it may speed up your hair re growth after your treatment has been completed. Here at Simone Thomas Dorset hair loss clinic, we stress that more research is needed to understand whether minoxidil is effective in re growing hair after cancer treatment has been completed. It is wise that you discuss this with your doctors during your consultations.

At Simone Thomas hair loss clinic in Bournemouth, we have seen thousands of men and women who suffer hair loss during their chemotherapy treatments. We have a friendly and relaxed Hair Loss Clinic where you can come in for a free hair loss consultation in a welcoming environment. You are more than welcome to bring a friend or family member with you to help you explore the options available to you with regards to making plans for your hair loss. Some of our clients chose to wear a scarf or a hat during their treatment, others chose to wear a real human hair wig or a synthetic hair wig. Some chose to cut their hair before treatment begins so the hair loss is less traumatic for them. Whatever you decide to do we are there for you every step of the way.
