Losing Your Hair Due to Stress?
Advice from the Trichologists at Simone Thomas Hair Loss Clinic in Bournemouth, Dorset
There’s no doubt that since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic we’ve all been facing unprecedented levels of stress. The day to day disruption of our lives, scrolling bad news, isolation from friends and family, grief, financial difficulties and extreme pressure on key workers can all take their toll on both our mental and physical health.
So can stress cause hair loss? The short answer is yes. There is a well established link between emotional distress and anxiety and thinning hair. Hair loss doesn’t usually happen immediately after a stressful event, but rather after about 6 to 12 weeks, linked to the hair’s usual growth cycles. Given the long term stress we have all been facing in recent months, it’s not surprising that many people are now seeing the impact on their hair.
If you are concerned that you are shedding more than usual and your hair is thinning, it’s important to seek advice from a professional to ascertain the underlying cause. At Simone Thomas Hair Loss Clinic in Dorset we specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of scalp and hair disorders. We can provide expert advice and treatments for stress related hair loss conditions.

How Does Stress Cause Hair Loss?
High stress levels are associated with a range of different hair loss conditions:
- Telogen Effluvium hair loss occurs when high stress levels result in large numbers of hair follicles being pushed into their resting phase. It may take several months to notice the disruption to your hair’s normal growth cycle, but it can result in shedding three times the normal amount of hairs on a daily basis, resulting in thinning. You can find out more here. The good news is that Telogen Effluvium is usually a temporary condition, and although there is no specific medical treatment for it, our hair loss specialists are able to offer you advice on nutrition and scalp treatments to stimulate hair growth.
- Alopecia Areata hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including high stress levels. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss. It’s a condition which causes patches of baldness and in many cases the hair grows back in a year or so. You can find out more about Alopecia here. At our Bournemouth Trichology Clinic we can diagnose your hair loss and offer treatments to stimulate re-growth. We also offer a wide range of wigs and hair pieces and volumisers to cover your bald patches until your natural hair regrows.
- Trichotillomania hair loss is caused by an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows and elsewhere on the body. It can be a way of dealing with negative or difficult feelings including stress, boredom, loneliness and frustration. At Simone Thomas we take a holistic approach to hair loss treatment, looking at the underlying causes. You can find out more about treatments for Trichotillomania here.
Covid-19 Hair Loss
As well as the mental strain caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we all know that it is an aggressive virus that can damage our bodies from top to toe. It is now emerging that in some cases this can include hair loss. If you have noticed any changes to your hair due to Coronavirus, help is available at our leading hair loss clinic in Westbourne.
As the the immune system fights back against Covid, the body’s resources are diverted to fighting the virus and protecting the vital organs. As the hair is not vital to the body’s functioning, it is one of the first things to be impacted in the case of illness. For more information, read our Blog post on Covid-19 Hair Loss.
